William L. Gilbert, a beloved father, dedicated veteran, and committed community member, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2024, at 74. William, known affectionately as "Bill" to his friends and family, was born on May 22, 1950. He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, demonstrating bravery and commitment to his fellow soldiers and his nation. For his heroic service in a combat zone, Bill was awarded the Bronze Star, a testament to his courage and dedication.
After returning home from Vietnam, Bill enrolled at the UCONN Torrington branch, where he met his future wife, Sue. Their love story blossomed, leading to a lifetime of shared memories and deep affection. Following his honorable discharge and education, Bill embarked on a long career at United Technologies, now Raytheon Technologies. Over the span of more than 30 years, his career took him from Connecticut to Florida and ultimately back to Connecticut. Throughout his journey, he worked in Financial Planning and Analysis, demonstrating commitment and loyalty to the company.
Bill's love for his family was evident. He is survived by his two sons, Matthew and Michael Gilbert, and his adopted dog Bruno. His beloved wife, Susan Dan Gilbert, preceded him in death in January 2021. Their bond and shared memories remain a testament to a lifetime of love, family, and partnership. An active and passionate member of the local baseball community, Bill was deeply involved in his sons' baseball journey, not just from the bleachers but as a dedicated coach. He devoted countless hours to coaching Little League, Mickey Mantle, and AAU teams during the years his sons were coming up through the leagues. His influence extended beyond the field, as he also served a term as president of the Torrington Little League.
