Walter Bayer Obituary

Walter Edward Bayer 89 of Torrington, passed away on June 4th , After a couple of months of declining health. Walter was born at home on March 16th 1932, to John and Caroline (Placta) Bayer. He grew up in Torrington and attended St Mary's of Czestochowa church where he was an alter boy for many years. In 1950 he meet the love of his life Cathy while ice skating on Besse pond with friends. In April of 1952 He joined the Navy and was sent to Bainbridge Maine for Basic training. He was later stationed aboard the USS Thompson and fought in the Korean War.  Walter Married the love of his life on May 22nd 1954 at Sacred Heart Church in Torrington.

After the wedding Walter and Cathy moved to San Pedro California where he was stationed for the rest of his Naval enlistment. Upon his discharge from the service he moved back to his childhood home, working as Tool & Die maker first at Fitzgerald’s and then A Square all while raising his 4 children. After retiring he worked at the Sullivan Senior center delivering Meals on wheels and in the kitchen.  Walter enjoyed camping with his family, each year making the family vacations fun and educational. The family enjoyed many happy weekends camping and fishing with his longtime friend and navy buddy John Burdick and his family. They later enjoyed traveling with good friends. 

The family would like to thank his caregiver Stacie, for her care and devotion, who was always there for him and us, when we needed her the most. And his nurse Kellie from VNA for the care she gave. 

 

Walter is survived by his wife of 67 years Catherine (Durstin) Bayer, his daughters Donna and husband Domingos Miranda of Cohoes NY. Rita and her .husband Jack Repas of Cornwall Bridge CT, Christine and her husband Manuel DaSilva of Torrington CT and his son David and his wife Lisa Bayer of Waterbury. He leaves behind 5 grandchildren that he cherished every minute he spent with them. Carrie and her husband Robert Wine of Ellington CT,  Manuel and Devon Dasilva both of Torrington, Carissa and her husband Michael Devino of Waterbury and Chelsea-Jo Bayer also of Waterbury. Three Great grandchildren Kiley Paige and Liyah Rose Wine and Joseph James(JJ) Devino. Many nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents he is predeceased by his infant son Anthony Bayer, his sister Doris Lukacovic, niece Diane Johnstone and nephew Gerald Lukacovic.

Visitation is private for immediate family 

 

Everyone else is asked to meet directly at the Church for a Mass of Christian burial Thursday June 10 at 11 AM at the St Francis Church of the St John Paul the Great parish. 160 Main St. Torrington. Burial with full military honors will follow at the new St Francis Cemetery South Main St.
