Robert T Toth, 79, of Torrington, CT, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, October 10th, at his home. He was the husband of the late Claudia Toth.
Robert was born in Torrington, CT on October 2, 1943, a son of the late Josephine (Nebiolo) and George Toth and was a graduate of Torrington High and Central Connecticut State College. He was a retired schoolteacher of 40 years. Robert started his career at the elementary school level at the former North School (which is now the Torrington Police Station) then went on to teach at Riverside and Vogel Schools; he spent the last 15 years of his career at the Torrington Middle School teaching both History and Math. To say he was beloved by so many of his students is an understatement. He was known as the disciplinarian not only in his classroom but the entire school(s). He also knew how to have fun, engage students and build a rapport with them; he was a mentor to so many over the years. Because of these endearing qualities, his students respected him and enjoyed having him as their teacher. As many have said "Mr. Toth is a legend in this town".
Robert was also an avid bodybuilder and workout enthusiast most of his life. Lifting weights and working out was a part of his daily routine right up until his passing. He also was a major history buff and would talk your ear off for hours. Robert and his daughter were hardcore New York Jets fans and spent many years faithfully watching the games together and cheering them on.
More than all of his hobbies and interests, Robert's faith is what he would want to best be remembered for; it was unwavering even in the most difficult of times. He was adamant about instilling this faith in his family and they will carry this with them for the remainder of time.
Robert leaves his beloved daughter, Elizabeth Cattey and grandchildren Nicholas Cattey and Michael Cattey, stepdaughter Catherine Sklenar and her husband Randy, and their children Brandon, Alexander, and Bella, sister-in-law Virginia Toth, several nieces, nephews, and cousins, beloved friends that were more like brothers, and last but not least, his cat Schnookie who was his faithful and loyal companion. He was predeceased by a brother, George Toth, who was also an educator out of state for many years.
Funeral Services will be held 12:00 PM on Monday, October 17th at Phalen Funeral Home in Torrington, with burial following at New Saint Francis Cemetery. Friends may call prior to the service from 10-Noon. ww.phalenfuneral.com
