Paul B. Hamlin, of Torrington, CT, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 31, surrounded by his beloved wife, Karla; his sister, Lois; his two children, Scott and Sarah; and other family members. He was 75 years old. Paul was born in Uniontown, PA, on June 5, 1948, the second child of David P. Hamlin and Flossy (Snow) Hamlin. He graduated from Kenmore East High School in the Town of Tonawanda, NY in 1966, where he was a competitive swimmer, a sport he later pursued as an adult with a master’s swim team. Paul earned a BS in Psychology from St. Lawrence University
in 1970, where he was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. He then worked for the St. Lawrence County Research and Development Corps for two years before moving to New Milford, CT, in 1972. Paul also served in the Army National Guard in NY and CT from 1970 to1976.
In Connecticut, Paul was employed as a Special Education teacher at the Devereux Glenholme School in Washington, CT, and later at EdAdvance in Litchfield, CT. After receiving his MS in Counseling from Southern Connecticut University, he worked as a Guidance Counselor both in the New Fairfield, CT school system and at Joel Barlow High School in Redding, CT. In retirement, Paul was active as president of the Board of Directors at Stillwater Condominium and a dedicated member of the Torrington Democratic Town Committee, where he served as treasurer. He and his wife, Karla, enjoyed kayaking in the Northeast and traveling internationally by land and sea. Paul loved listening to and learning about music, particularly folk and rock from the 1960s and
1970s, jazz, and blues guitar. In addition to his passion for swimming, he enjoyed outdoor activities such as day hikes, kayaking, beach outings, and driving his red Miata convertible. He
was a connoisseur of fine wines, bourbon, good food, and a good cup of coffee. Above all, he cherished spending time with his family and friends.
Paul leaves behind his wife, Karla Nebiolo; his children, Scott (Catherine Quinn) Hamlin and Sarah (Gregory) Walsh; his stepchildren, Rhianon (Steven) Carile and Raymond (Jenna) Michna;
his siblings, David Hamlin and Lois Weaver; and his seven grandchildren, Evan Hamlin, Brooke Walsh, Kyle Walsh, Mia Carile, Ryleigh Michna, Marley Carile, and Paisley Michna. He also leaves behind a wide circle of family and friends, including his first wife, Erni Johnson. Paul was predeceased by his parents, David and Flossy Hamlin.
Calling hours will be on Wednesday, June 19, at the Phalen Funeral Home, Torrington, CT, from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM. A Celebration of Life will follow at noon at Crystal Peak, Torrington, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Little Guild Animal Shelter in Cornwall, CT, or to The Susan B. Anthony Project, The Brooker Memorial, or Friendly Hands Food Bank, all in Torrington, CT.
