Nimar T. Coury, or “TJ” as he was affectionately called by his loved ones, died peacefully at the age of 72 at his longtime home “Carriage Manor” in Waterbury, CT on May 24, 2024.
Born on November 13, 1951, Nimar was the son of Nimar and Mary (Narsiff) Coury. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his brothers David, John, William (Bill), Charles (Chuck), and Gerry, and his sister Marcia Hasemann. He was the last of the seven Coury siblings that grew up on Monroe Street in Torrington to pass away. He is survived by many people who cared about him and loved him, especially his friends and the staff at Carriage Manor and his nieces, nephews and other family members all over the country.
Whether you knew him as Nimar, TJ or Uncle Nim, this great man was known to all as a gentle soul. He was kind, genuine, and very funny. He was probably the quietest member of his family growing up, often found reading or listening to music alone. He was incredibly intelligent, and in his teenage years was offered a scholarship to the prestigious Hotchkiss school. He later traveled the country, making friends and creating happiness along the way. As an adult, TJ loved to walk. He would walk around Waterbury for hours each day. Often, you could find him happily strolling down to the green, making his rounds and heading back home.
TJ had a brilliant mind and a beautiful heart. He treated everyone with great respect. Whether you were a child with many questions, a new acquaintance, someone he saw daily for over a decade or those he hadn’t seen in years, TJ was always patient, engaged and encouraging. He always had a joke or a shy smile. He continued to love music, games and friends, but also valued quiet time and solitude. He was an example to all in overcoming obstacles and staying optimistic in hard times. TJ is already missed by many, and will be remembered by all who loved him.
In this chaotic world, we all could benefit by being a little more like TJ. He showed us how to live a peaceful life: walk often, smile at everyone, take care of your mental health, and do things that make you happy. Sit in silence. Be honest yet kind, laugh often, avoid negativity, embrace levity yet be contemplative. Teach children the skill of letting things go and the art of forgiveness. Make everyone feel respected. Make your little corner of the world a better place to be. Graveside Services Thursday June 27 at 1 PM at Saint Francis Cemetery in Torrington. wwww.phalenfuneral.com
