Murielle Tuxbury Obituary

Murielle Marie (St. Amand) Tuxbury of Torrington, Conn. passed away on March 15, 2023 at the age of 83. Murielle was born in Burlington, Vermont on September 23, 1939, a daughter of the late Martine (Roy) and Albert St. Amand.

She was the wife of the late G. Richard Tuxbury, with whom she celebrated 62 years of marriage this past summer. She loved her husband, putting his care above her own. Murielle was a dedicated mother and role model for her four children at every age of their lives. She was also a kind and dependable neighbor.

Murielle was trained at Becker Junior College in Massachusetts and worked as a medical secretary. She married on May 14, 1960, moving to Ashland, New Hampshire with Richard to run a clothing store.  Following that, the couple moved the family to Torrington, where Richard, and later Murielle, worked at Mertz Company, running the shoe department.  She also worked for Hemlock Construction Company and the Northwestern Connecticut Girl Scout Council. Above all else, Murielle made a loving home for her family.
She kept the family together as it grew, renting “the cottage” each summer as a gathering place. There, along with her children, grandchildren and recently her great-grandchildren, she would sunbathe, sail, kayak, make meals, and enjoy summer evenings at “dock hour.” She had the best tan in the family every year!

Murielle was a devout Catholic and parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Torrington, where she also served as a Eucharistic Minister. She played guitar and sang as part of the parish folk group for many years. Murielle enjoyed flowers and spent time volunteering in the church gardens. She had a strong devotion to the Holy Virgin, Mary, and prayed the rosary faithfully. Her faith carried her through adversity, including the illness of her husband, through which she was committed to providing him with the best care. She performed many more acts of mercy known only to God.

Murielle leaves behind four children: a daughter, Donna Fisher and her husband, Doug, of Vernon, Conn; and three sons, Stephen and his wife, Lila, of Barkhamsted, Conn.; Michael and his wife, Lee, of East Hampton, Conn.; and Bryan and his wife, Lisa, of Glastonbury, Conn. She also leaves 15 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Her immediate family includes her sister Dorothy Waller and her late husband, David, of Vermont; brother Martin St. Amand and his wife, Kathy, of New York; and brother Albert St. Amand Jr. and wife, Marie, of Vermont. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.

The family is especially grateful for care provided by UConn Medical Center and Foothills VNA. Euro-American Connections/Homecare was a blessing in securing Murielle’s loving caregiver.
