Louis Szabo Obituary

Louis Francis Szabo, a lifelong Torrington resident passed away on October 12, 2022, at the age of 100.  His loving family was at his side during the last days of his life. He was the husband of Ann Ferrier Szabo. They were married on June 14, 1952 and celebrated their 70 th wedding anniversary this year. Lou was born on May 16, 1922, the son of Louis and Elizabeth Szabo who immigrated from Hungary in 1906. As a child living in the south end of Torrington during the Great Depression, he helped to support his family working as a paperboy with over 500 customers that spanned from Perkins St. to Water St. . Lou graduated from Torrington High School, Class of 1940, and continued his education at Aero Industries Technical Institute in Glendale, CA. During this time WWII started, and he came back to CT to enlist in the US Navy, in 1942. He was an aviation Machinist Mate, First Class. In 1946, he worked for Pratt and Whitney. He had a successful career at The Patterson Oil Company in Torrington, 1950-1984. He was instrumental in the company’s growth by expanding its tire, oil, and gas business while establishing the Patco Handy Stops throughout Litchfield County. He retired as the company President in 1984.
Lou was a skilled golfer and the longest living member of The Torrington Country Club. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and the longest living member of the Torrington Elks. He was an amateur airplane pilot and was well read in world history and religion. He could be seen many days taking a ride with one his beloved German Shepherds. Lou always made time for his family and volunteered as a Cub Scout leader and instructional league baseball coach. He and Ann enjoyed spending time with their family and friends, going out to dinner, traveling, holidays, football games at Yale, and weddings. He always had a welcoming smile for everyone who visited their home and thoroughly enjoyed many years of summer backyard pool gatherings.
In addition to his wife Ann, he is survived by his eight sons, Louis Jr, Thomas (Gloria), Gerald (Valerie), Richard (Susan), Michael (Patricia), David (Kelly), Robert (Laurie), Daniel (Kris) and grandchildren, Gerald, David Jr, Samantha, Michael Jr, Bryan, Nicholas, Jacqueline, Robert, Emily, Jack, Ila, Paul, Kyle, Brandon, and Elizabeth, and great grandchildren, Gerald, Hannah Rose, and Cameron. He is also survived by his brother-in law Michael Ferrier and his wife Debbie, and three nieces and one nephew. He was pre-deceased by his four sisters, Betty (Joseph) Miklos, Helen (Reno) Foglia, Margaret (William) Marquardt, Ann (Argen) Post, one brother James (Mary) Szabo, his dear grandson, Derek Thomas Szabo,
and his nephew, Eugene (Billy) Viczus. Louis’s family would like to extend a very special thank you to David and Kelly Szabo for the loving care given to Lou these past five years. Lou enjoyed the many trips with them to their vacation home in Old Forge NY and the happy times with all their family.
There are no calling hours. Private graveside services will be held at St Peters Cemetery with Military Honors at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Paralyzed Veterans of America.
