Joyce M (Walker) Maher

Joyce M. Maher of Harwinton died November 12th 2020 at home.  She was the wife of Jeffrey Maher.  Born in Mt. Vernon NY,  she was the daughter of the late James and Shirley (Smith) Walker.  Joyce graduated from Hamden High School (CT) in 1961.  She enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Bremerton WA where she received training as a Hospital Corpsman.  Upon discharge from the Navy,  Joyce continued her nursing education earning her Licensed Practical Nursing certificate from Kaynor Technical School/Waterbury Hospital.  She worked 28 years as a LPN including 20 years at Valerie Manor in Torrington.  Joyce loved her family and her animals.  She raised and handled Irish Setters for many years and later on, Welsh Springer Spaniels.  She also enjoyed her cats,  her parrot, her tropical fish, and the many wild turkeys and other birds that would visit her yard.  She also loved to bowl in the senior league at Sky Top Lanes where she made many friends. She was a loyal Red Sox fan and enjoyed watching game shows on television.

Beside her husband of 52 years,  she leaves a son Christopher Maher of Canton,  daughter Amy Maher of Burlington, and five grandchildren,  Elizabeth, Alex, and Carolyn Gallagher,  and Kyle and Luke Maher.  She was predeceased by her first born son Michael in 2014.  Also left behind are numerous relatives and many good friends.

Graveside Services will be held Wednesday Nov 18th at 11 AM at Hillside Cemetery 76 Walnut St Torrington.  Calling Hours are Tuesday Nov. 17 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Phalen Funeral Home 285 Migeon Ave Torrington.  In lieu of flowers,  memorial donations may be made to the Little Guild 285 Sharon-Goshen Tpke West Cornwall CT 06796.  www.phalenfuneral.com
