Josephine Doot Obituary

Josephine Doot, 93, of Torrington passed away peacefully on Saturday August 26, 2023, at home.  By her side was her husband, Raymond Doot, just as he was always with her during their 71 years of marriage, along with numerous family members.  She was and will always be remembered as a loving wife of Ray, and mom or "Mima" to their six children, 19 grandchildren, and 36 greatgrandchildren.

Born in Newark N.J. July 24, 1930, Jo was the daughter of the late Anthony and Maria (Fontana) Vivona.  She was a graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University with a degree in Social Work.  When her youngest entered school, she resumed working as a social worker at McLean Home in Simsbury CT, advocating for her patients for almost 20 years.  After raising their family in Simsbury, CT, she and her husband retired to Brewster MA (Cape Cod).  They also enjoyed many winters in the shore in Garden City, South Carolina.

She loved Jesus and was a dedicated Catholic.  She faithfully served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years and was an active member of the Franciscans.  She fiercely loved and advocated for her family.  When Jo and Ray both retired, they spent the second half of their lives together traveling, both US and abroad-spending time with family and serving others.

In addition to her husband Ray, Jo is survived by a son Duane and wife Kathy, son Dave and wife Dianne, son Chris and wife Sandy, daughter Maria and husband Jim Giffune, son Greg and wife Eileen, and son in law Larry Pittinger.  She also leaves sister Eleanor Capik and brother Morris Vivona, life-long friend and confidante Grace Natale, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her daughter Doreen Pittinger, and sister Anne Manganelli. Mima's end-of-life journey was blessed by many outside her large family, with special thanks to caregivers Suzanna, Carey, Keondra, and Sunny.  The family also thanks Hartford Healthcare Hospice, who provided care, guidance, and support to the family through her passing.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday August 31, at 11 AM at St. Francis Church of Saint John Paul the Great Parish, 160Main St, Torrington, CT.  Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Torrington.  Calling Hours are Wednesday Aug. 30, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Phalen Funeral Home 285 Migeon Ave Torrington. If desired, online memorials can be posted to www.phalenfuneral.com.  In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to one of her favorite charities-ST Jude's Children's Research Hospital (www.stjude.org) or EWTN Global Catholic Network (www.ewtn.com).
