Joseph Roland Marquis, 93, of Torrington, Ct passed away peacefully Sunday, September 24, 2023, at Hartford Hospital with his family by his side.
Joseph was born in Winsted, Ct on October 31, 1929. He was the son of Albert and Adela (Royer) Marquis.
He attended Gilbert High School in Winsted, CT. Toward the end of his high school career, Joseph enlisted in the Army. He joined the 8th Army G.H.Q. during the occupation and served in Tokyo, Japan until 1948. He was later recalled for service during the Korean War and honorably discharged in 1952. Joseph then attended Central Connecticut State College and graduated in 1956. Continuing his education, Joseph went on to study at The University of Connecticut, where he received a master's degree in education in 1963. He was a teacher in the Torrington school district for 36 years, where he was adored by the many children who were lucky to be educated by him. His retirement from teaching came in June of 1991. Joseph was an avid member of the Elks Lodge 372 for 35 years. He was active in the Elks Lodge Glee Club and Bowling League. Joseph was also a lifelong member of the VFW Post 296 in Winsted, Ct.
He was the loving husband of Ruth (Sarto) Marquis for 68 years.
Joseph is survived by two loving and devoted daughters, Denise Arbucci and husband, John of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, and Cheryl St. Pierre of Torrington, Ct. He also leaves behind granddaughter, Heather Box and husband, William, and two great-granddaughters, Ashley and Lindsay St. Pierre, whom he loved dearly. In addition to two sisters, one brother, many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Joseph was predeceased by the love of his life and wife of 68 years, Ruth (Sarto) Marquis, his beloved grandson, Justin St. Pierre, sisters Lorette, Jeanette, Noella, Gertrude, Yolanda, and brother, Albert. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral Services will be held Friday Sept 29 at 11 AM at Phalen Funeral Home with burial following at St Peter Cemetery. Friends may call prior to the service from 10-11 AM. www.phalenfuneral.com
