TORRINGTON-Joseph Carmine Gelormino, 91 of Torrington, passed away on Feb. 23 after a long illness. He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Viola. Joe was born on May 2, 1928, son of the late Carmine and Lena Gelormino. He was a 1945 graduate of Torrington High School.
Joe served in the army as company commander of the Torrington National Guard with the retiring rank of Major from 1948-1969 and was a Veteran of the Korean War. He was appointed Colonel on the Governor’s staff. He proudly organized and led Torrington’s Memorial Parade for 30 years.
Joe started his working career in his family Plastering Business and then went on to learn real estate, working for Bredice Realty before joining the Torrington Savings Bank in 1974. Joe retired in 1996 as VP of the mortgage department where he loved assisting people in acquiring their homes.
He always remained active in the community, serving on Torrington’s City Council, Treasurer of the Red Cross, Campaign Chairman of the United Way, Democratic Town Committee, and Litchfield Credit Bureau. Until recently, he served as a Trustee of the Torrington Savings Bank, Torrington Library, President of Hillside Cemetery, member of Brooker Memorial, the Elks and St Peter’s Holy Name Society.
He enjoyed playing golf at Eastwoods and Greenwoods Country Clubs. Being a family man, he always loved being with his grandchildren and especially his great granddaughters.
Joe is survived by two sons, David Gelormino and wife Aida of Waterbury, Gary Gelormino and wife Lynn of New Hartford, and a daughter, Joanne Seamans and husband Alden of Maine, three grandchildren, Scott and wife Stephanie of New Hartford, Michael and wife Erin of Ridgefield and Kristen Wabrek and husband Steve of Barkhamsted, five great granddaughters, three nieces; one nephew; one grandniece; and two brother in laws, Gordon Benedict and Robert DelVecchio.
Predeceased by his wife, Viola; an infant son, Joseph; a sister, Lenore DelVecchio; a sister in law, Doris Benedict; and a nephew, Robert Benedict.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday Feb. 27 at 11 AM at Saint Peter Church in Torrington. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Phalen Funeral Home. Memorial contributions can be made to the Torrington Library, LARC, or the Warner Theatre.
