John E. Roy, 72, of Torrington died at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital with his devoted wife, Marilyn A. (Hudach) Roy, by his side, on Thursday, January 28, 2021. John was the son of the late Wilfrid H. and Alice (Gregoire) Roy of Avon and the father of David John Roy. Besides his wife and son, John leaves behind three brothers and their wives: Roland J. Roy, Sr. (Maureen), of Windsor; Gregory P. Roy (Karen), of Haines City Florida, and Wilfrid L. Roy (Doreen) of Barkhamsted. He also leaves a sister and her husband, Denise Smedick (David) of Torrington and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Pat Hudach, of Torrington, as well as many, many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. John was predeceased by his sister, Alice Langer Olson of Canton.
John was born on August 6, 1948, in Rawdon, Quebec, Canada. He attended AI Prince Technical High School for printing and graduated in 1966. John served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict and was assigned to the U.S. STRAT Command for the Pentagon and obtained the rank of Specialist 5.
John loved to travel, especially the family summer vacations anywhere from Florida to Maine. John and Marilyn recently traveled to Aruba in celebration of their retirements and they looked forward to more vacations. He was a very active member of The Burlington Men’s Club and the Torrington BPO of Elks. He served as a Minister of the Eucharist for Our Lady of Hope Parish (Immaculate Heart of Mary, Harwinton) and serving his faith this way gave him great pleasure.
John will always be remembered for having a joke at the ready, his big personality, and his pride being a member of a loving, large, albeit noisy, family. Services will be held Friday March 5, 10 AM at Immaculate Heart Church in Harwinton. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery. .www.phalenfuneral.com
