John Martin Kilgore, aged 69, died on July 15, 2020. Named for both of his grandfathers, he was born in Hartford CT on April 19, 1951 and lived in Avon, Mansfield and Litchfield CT. As a young child John benefited from an agency co-founded by his mother and other families under the name of Farmington Valley Association for Retarded Children. This organization grew into the present-day Farmington Valley Association for Retarded and Handicapped (FAVARH). John was deeply loved and cared for by his three sisters as they were growing up. He loved to spend time walking outdoors and exploring the woods near his home. John shared a great love of ice cream with his father and if a ride to get some was suggested he was the first one in the car. He will be remembered for his gentle soul and his love of music – in fact, his signature song became BIG JOHN and he played it all day long. Perhaps to remind us how special he was.
He was preceded in death by his parents Charlie and Lynn (Molodeski) Kilgore and his Stepmother, Nina Newton Kilgore. John is survived by his sisters: Susan Kilgore of Calabash NC; Dennise Howard and her husband Fred of Reno NV; Marianne Lee and her husband Ron of Bluffton SC and members of his blended family: Rae (Newton) Gee and her husband Tom of New Bern NC; Brian Newton and his wife Judy (Bowes) of Arvada CO; Mark Newton and his wife Donna (Garilli) of Granby CT as well as many nieces/nephews and grandnieces/grandnephews. The family wishes to express deep gratitude to Melissa and all the staff at John's group home in Litchfield for the loving care that they gave him for many years of his life. We know that they will miss him as much as we do. Interment will be at Saint Ann's Cemetery in Avon and a memorial service will be held later. In lieu of flowers donations made to FAVARH (225 Commerce Drive, Canton CT 06019) would honor John
