John E. Abeling, 95, passed away peacefully at home on February 17th, 2025, with his beloved wife of 73 years, Priscilla, by his side. Born on December 26th, 1929, to the late Raymond O. and Catherine (Murphy) Abeling, John was a lifelong resident of Torrington, CT.
John met the love of his life, Priscilla Potter, during their school days, and they married on April 15th, 1951. Together, they raised five wonderful children: Richard, Keith, Thomas, Brenda, and Lisa. John’s proudest title was "Dad," and he was the best one anyone could have asked for. His family meant everything to him, and his love and support for them were immeasurable.
A proud Navy veteran, John served for four years as a gunner's mate aboard the USS Strong Destroyer during the Korean Conflict. His service took him to ports around the world, but it was his return to Torrington where he built the home that would become the heart of his family. A 35 years career at SNET followed, but John never truly "retired." His passion for tinkering in his garage, starting new projects, and fixing anything that needed it kept him busy well into his later years. Whether he was building, repairing, or creating, there was always something to be done, and he was the man for the job.
John was a lifetime member of both the Masonic Lodge and the Torrington Elks Lodge #372. He was deeply honored to be awarded "Elk of the Year" for 1977-1978. Anyone who knew him could attest to his loyalty, dedication, and willingness to lend a helping hand. In his spare time, John enjoyed bowling, golfing, and pitching horseshoes in his backyard with friends. He was an avid card player and always had the luck of the Irish on his side. John loved having company and being surrounded by those he held dear.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Francis Cusati and Lillian Jennings; his brothers, William, Raymond, Charles, and Mark Abeling; and his granddaughter, Jessica Janelle. He is survived by his devoted wife, Priscilla; sons Richard (Jean), Keith (JoAnn), and Thomas (Emily); daughters Brenda and Lisa; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and many loving nieces and nephews.
A celebration of John's life will be held on February 28th, 2025, at Phalen Funeral Home, with visitation from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM and a service to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Shriners Children's Hospital.
John’s legacy lives on in the laughter of his family, the warmth of his friendships, and the ability to find joy in the simple things. He made life better for everyone around him. Rest in peace, John. You will be loved and missed forever.
