George Edward Durstin

George Edward Durstin, age 77, of New Hartford CT, peacefully passed away on June 8, 2023.  Born in Torrington CT in 1946, he attended Saint Francis School, graduating in 1960, the same year he earned his Eagle Scout Award.  in 1964, he graduated from Torrington High School.  He graduated from Niagara University in 1968 with a BS in Economics and a commission as a Second lieutenant in the US Army.  while at Niagara, he met a classmate, Ellen, a Nursing student and they were married in 1968.  He served 2 years in the Army in Germany as an officer in Nike Hercules Missile Battalion and 6 years in the Army Reserve.  While in Germany he and Ellen caught the travel bug and visited many nearby countries.

George worked all of his career in finance and banking, retiring as a Senior Vice President of the Bank of America.  he was involved in several local organizations including serving as Treasurer of the New Hartford Historical Society and New Hartford Land Trust.  George also served for many years as a Trustee of Torrington Elks Lodge.  The thing he loved the most was traveling with his wife, Ellen.  Together they have been on 50 cruises and have crisscrossed the USA on trains and have been to almost 50 countries.

In addition to Ellen, he leaves his sisters Nancy Durstin and Deborah Keefe, and her husband Paul and daughter Sarah and her partner Peter Millar, an aunt and several cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, George C. and Alice S. Durstin.

There will be no calling hours.  A private, family only service with military honors will be held at Phalen Funeral Home.  A Celebration of life is being planned for later in the Summer.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Niagara University, Niagara University NY 14109 or to visiting Nurse and Hospice of Litchfield County 32 Union St Winsted CT 06098.  online memorials www.phalenfuneral.com
