Gary Storrs Obituary

Gary L. Storrs, 73 of Torrington, CT, passed away December 12, 2023 at Yale New Haven Hospital surrounded by his loving family.  He was the beloved husband of Deborah (Beckwith) Storrs for 39 years.

Gary was born July 21, 1950 in Torrington, CT, son of the late Kenneth and Lina (Logan) Storrs.  He was a 1968 graduate of Torrington High School and did 2 years post-graduate study in Automotive at the Oliver Wolcott School. Gary was a Certified Ford, Lincoln-Mercury Service Technician who worked at many dealerships including Torrington Ford and Crestwood Ford in Watertown.  After retirement, he kept busy at Ross Motorcar and MacDonald Auto Parts. His mechanical skills didn’t only include cars, he excelled in repairs of all kinds including bicycles, lawnmowers, snow blowers and pretty much anything! There were very few things he couldn’t fix! His sons often joked that when they were in a jam they would say, “WWPD?” ( What would Papa do?) He was always there with a helping hand for anyone who asked!

Gary played bass for several bands including OBG Express, music of the 50’s and 60’s where son Kenny was bit by the music bug! Later he joined his wife Debbie in a blue grass band called Mad River Crossing!

Gary was Viet Nam era veteran, attaining the rank of Sergeant E5, Armored Infantry in the US Army. He was a member of the 50 Mile Club and received the National Defense Service medal and was honorably discharged in July 1976.

In addition to his beloved wife Debbie, he is survived by four sons, Frederick Storrs, Derek Storrs (Jenna), Sean Storrs (Sarah) all of Torrington, CT and Kenneth Storrs (Nicole) of Winsted, CT; five grandchildren, Riley Storrs, Peyton Storrs, Ethan Newman, Quinn Storrs and Ryan Beckner; Sister-in-law Barbara Storrs, as well as several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Storrs and James Storrs and one sister, Patricia Bruckner.

Many thanks to the entire staff at Smilow Cancer Center in Torrington, especially Dr. Ashita Telsania, Dr Harvey, Sarah, Abby, Carey, Cathy, John, Teena, Aria, Jordan, Lisa Shenia, Tom, Sabrina and Mary Ann…and so many more who worked so diligently to combat Leukemia!
