Ernest Marquard Obituary

Ernest A. Marquard Jr. 93 of Torrington, devoted father, loving husband, cherished grandfather, passed away peacefully at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital on Feb 2, 2026. He was the only child
of Ernest Marquard Sr and Emma (Reupka). He leaves behind the love of his life, his wife Audrey (Johnson) Marquard, married for 73 years. Also their four children, Gregory, David and
his wife, Sheryl, Kevin and his wife, Shelli, and his daughter Karen Zarillo and her husband Phil.
Ernie was a lifelong resident of Torrington and a veteran, having served in the Navy as a Seabee stationed in the Philippines. He was the owner of The Marquard Painting Company for
40 years. After his retirement, he then worked 25 more years as a custodian at JCPenney‘s in Torrington.
He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying daily walks, and frequently seen walking all over Torrington, still to the age of 90 years old. He enjoyed many years of summers at their cottage in Old Saybrook. After selling, he then enjoyed yearly trips to Florida and also spent many hours poolside at his home. He also was a member of the health club at the YMCA and never missed a day of paddle ball, basketball, swimming, or resting in the sauna. In younger days he was a member of the Seneca Masonic Lodge, and also the Elks Lodge of Torrington.
In addition to his wife and children, he was a proud Grandpa/Papa leaving behind 11 grandchildren, Richard and his wife, Kelleigh, Matthew, Tarah and her husband, Matt, Kirk  Ernest, and his wife, Lindsey, Brian, Katelyn, Jeffrey and his wife, Jessica, Michael, PJ, Melanie and Lily. He also was a great grandfather to 13, Victoria, Alexa, Max, KJ, Duke, Forest, Isabella, Shaela,
Jeffrey, Callie, Josephine, Leo and Skylar. He also left behind a brother-in-law, Kenneth Johnson, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and a daughter-in-law Patty.
The family would like to extend gratitude to the 5th floor nurses and aides at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital for their compassionate care. A special thank you to Claudia at Valerie Manor and Jennifer Verrilli at Charlotte Hungerford for their exceptional care and support and lastly to Ashley Jasensky for all she has done for her Ernie. He loved you deeply and we will always be grateful.
His legacy will live on through his loving family, and the many lives that he has touched along the way he will be missed by all who loved him.
Calling hours are Saturday, February 21 from 10 AM to 12 PM at the Phalen Funeral home 285 Migeon Ave. Torrington followed by a service to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital www.phalenfuneral.com
