Ellen (Devine) Curry 73 Passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in her home on August 9th. Born to the late Robert and Mary Anne Devine on August 19,1950 in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was a graduate of North Central High School in 1968. She continued on to Miami Dade Junior College where she met her husband of 52 years Ora Curry Jr. Together they moved to Long Island New York and started their family. The two settled in Torrington CT in 1980 where they raised their 2 children, Ora III and Alison.
Ellen was the ultimate sports mom. Not to only her children but also many others in the community that thought of her as a second mom. She was a constant staple at any ball field in town and was always there to help get kids to and from their activities. Ellen was known for packing her Honda Accord with kids as she never wanted anyone to lose out. She was an active volunteer for many sports programs in town such as the Pop Warner Football League where she held a board position for many years and volunteered as a cheerleading advisor. You would often find her on warm spring nights working in the concession stand down at Oak Ave while watching what she thought was the best baseball in town and rooting on not just her own but all the other kids she treated like family.
One of her most favorite memories was while working several summers for the park and Recreation running their pony league baseball program. A sandlot style type of baseball full of fun, laughter and lifelong friendships made. The sounds of John Fogerty’s Put me in coach blaring from her car as she attempted to pump up her kids and often the others she grabbed along the way for a morning of some good old fashioned baseball fun. Every chid in that car was singing by the time they arrived.
Ellen worked as a CNA at Valerie Manor for many years ending her career working in the adult day center at Summerville (now The Cottage of Lichfield Hills). Her love for people, compassion and nurturing ways impacted so many of the clients she worked with throughout those years.
She was the ultimate grandma. Once again becoming a fixture at those same fields she frequented so many years ago. You would see her at games, music concerts, award ceremonies, and preschool graduations with her contagious smile and beaming with pride. She touched the lives of so many people and will forever be missed.
Ellen is survived by her husband Ora Curry Jr, Daughter Alison Curry-Radwan and her three children Abe, Kal and Mya Radwan .
