Elizabeth (Long) Anderson

May 18, 1948 ~ February 27, 2022 (age 73)

Elizabeth Long Anderson died peacefully and unexpectedly, on Sunday, February 27, 2022. The daughter of Thomas and Mabel Long, Betty was born on May 18, 1948, her parents’ twelfth wedding anniversary. She grew up in Harwinton and attended Lewis S. Mills High School, afterwards obtaining a degree in Elementary Education from the University of Connecticut, and her Master’s degree in Special Education/Remedial Reading from Central Connecticut State University. Betty taught in the Torrington Public Schools for thirty years in a number of schools.  After retirement, she worked for Head Start in Torrington  and was active in many retired teachers’ organizations.

Betty is survived by her loving brother, John Long and his partner,  Margaret Gibson, of Preston, CT; her cousins Richard and Nancy Roberts, Edie and John Senack, Emil and Norma Gianni, Cathy and John Angevine, Susan and David DiCara, and Gail and Michael Godburn and their families. She is predeceased by her parents and by her husband, John Anderson, and by her longtime partner, James Fracasso.

Betty will be remembered by her many friends, colleagues, and former students. Soft-spoken and kind, she had a memorable laugh, and was a great dancer. She was a generous volunteer at Torrington’s Warner Theater and in the gift shop at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. She loved singing, and in high school sang with The Country Cousins, performing folk songs. Betty enjoyed being a member of Connecticut Yankee Chorale, and the Litchfield County Chorale Union, which performed summers at the Norfolk Music Festival. She also traveled with the Waterbury Chorale, performing concerts in Europe and in China. A constant traveler, she enjoyed numerous trips with friends to every continent except Australia, while also traveling extensively in the US and Canada. An enthusiastic UCONN Huskies Women’s Basketball fan, Betty was a season ticket holder, attending many Final Four Championship Tournaments.
