Doris C. Smith 99 of Harwinton passed away peacefully on July 5th, 2023, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington. She was born in Torrington to Joseph and Mabel (Aloise) Copacino on March 26, 1924. She lived in Harwinton since she was 17 and was a graduate of Torrington High School. She married Donald Smith Sr. on July 2, 1950, and they were married for 73 years. They had two children, Donald Jr, and Nancy.
In her youth, she spent time in Delray Beach, FL, where her folks had a home. During WW2 she was a nurse’s aide for the Navy and helped entertain the troops based in Boca Raton. She was always very active in social groups, being a member of Harwinton's Tennis Club, Garden Club, and the Historical Society. She was a member of the Harwinton Congregational church, where she was active on various committees, and was a founding member of the Harwinton Woman’s Club, where she would contribute a quilting square every year. She loved to golf with her friends and has loved tennis since playing for her high school team. She enjoyed old movies, having a favorite seat at the Warner Theater; loved a good joke, particularly one played on her husband, Don; and liked to spend her time gardening. Flowers were her passion and enjoyed them all around her home.
Doris enjoyed people and didn’t have a bad word for anyone. When asked what the key was to living so long, she would always say that it was because she drank tea every day. She loved raising her children and was a wonderful mom. Her friends were very important to her. She would always receive so many birthday calls and cards. Doris and family enjoyed vacationing on the Cape and wintering in Melbourne, FL.
Doris was pre-deceased by her brother Raymond Copacino and her son Donald A. Smith Jr. She is survived by her husband Donald A. Smith Sr., daughter Nancy Smith Hendrix, granddaughter Allison Page and her husband David Page of Louisville, CO; sister-in-law Shirley Smith and many nieces and nephews.
She will be greatly missed by family and friends.
