Doris (Furlin) Malahan

Doris R. Malahan, 91, passed away peacefully Monday, April 20, 2020 at Saint Mary Home, West Hartford due to coronavirus related respiratory issues.    

Doris was born in Torrington, Connecticut on June 22, 1928 and was the daughter of the late Delia (Furlin) Ildeni and Antonio Furlin. She was sadly predeceased by her three sons, Brian, Dennis and Thomas, her brother John and her sister Shirley. Doris graduated from Torrington High School in 1945 and after her four children were grown, worked at the Timex Corporation in Torrington. She was also a primary caregiver to her late mother and brother during their illnesses and provided loving care for several of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

She was happiest when visiting with her family and reading, especially mysteries. As an avid reader, in her final week, Doris was thrilled to walk to the third floor dining room at Saint Mary Home to find a makeshift library and borrowed 2 new books to read. Doris will be greatly missed by all who loved her.  She will be cherished for her kind and generous spirit, her love of children and animals as well as for her strength and perseverance. Her love of gardening, cooking and teatime and are fond memories that will be held dear to those close to her.

Doris is survived by her daughter, Patricia, her cousin, Marie Celadon, who was like a sister to her, 6 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. 

Thank you to the many wonderful healthcare givers on the third floor at Saint Mary Home as well as Sue, her APRN, Sheila, Beth, Janice and Alice. You are angels who provided Doris with care, comfort, cheer and spiritual solace during difficult times when family visitation was not allowed due to the pandemic. 

A private service will be held at a later date. Arrangements will be made by Phelan Funeral Home, Torrington, CT.
