Daniel Ray, eldest son of Daniel B. and Mary Ann Ray, passed away on January 15, 2021. He was born in Princeton, NJ, raised in Hingham, MA, and lived his adult years in New Hartford and Torrington, CT. Survived by daughter Danielle and former wife Marita of New Hartford, CT, companion Laura Sweetman of Litchfield, CT, brothers Michael of Jericho, VT and David of Otis, ME, and sister Carolyn of Pittsford, NY. Dan graduated from Harvard in 1978 with a BA in Psychology. He earned his M.Ed. from The University of Hartford, a sixth-year certificate from CCSU, and a Certificate in Administration from SHU. He taught first at the Pilot School in Cambridge, MA, then the Wilderness School in Goshen, CT, the Hartford Public Schools, and Regional School District 15 in Middlebury/Southbury. Until a spinal injury sidelined him, Dan loved playing tennis and enjoyed the outdoors through hiking, backpacking, camping, cycling, paddling, climbing, and running. He also enjoyed woodworking, renovating his old house, and gardening. While in college, he worked as an EMT and later volunteered in CT with NHVA. He was a volunteer firefighter with the South End Fire Department. Never long without a dog, he lovingly raised Tasha, Thlayli, Misty, Indie, and Blaze. He found much comfort at Trinity Episcopal Church in Torrington where he was a Deacon. Daniel had a beautiful heart, and was a bright light for many. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dan's name to the NHVA, or the charity of your choice that reflects how Dan lived his life. Services will be held at a later date.
