Beverly Manes, 75, Litchfield, CT: On July 6, 2024, at her home, a bell rang and an angel got her wings. After moving from her birthplace, Rumford, ME, she grew up in Torrington, CT where she met the love of her life, Joseph, on a blind date ice skating at Besse Pond. They had many adventures during their almost 60 year courtship and 55 year marriage including San Francisco, Las Vegas, Aruba and her favorite, Hawaii. She left her job as accountant at the Torrington Company to raise her two daughters, Jean (West Springfield, MA) and Corinne (Southington, CT.) They learned to sew watching her make quilts at her parents', Jean & Gerald Haynes', home, and through her needle working. They learned to cook and bake after watching and helping her make many holiday treats. She was known far and wide for her apple pies and Christmas cookies. She spent many years volunteering with the Girl Scouts, teaching archery at Camp Maria Pratt to keep the girls entertained throughout the summer. As they got older, she returned to work, first with the Litchfield Public Schools as recess monitor & teachers aide. After another 20 years of further public service as Assistant Tax Collector of Litchfield and President of her union, she retired. Always a giver, never a taker, she continued to serve on the executive board of the AFSCME Retirees until her illness stopped her. She knew so many people, her family joked she could travel anywhere in the world and run into someone eager to talk to her. Her smile lit up every room she entered. She enjoyed playing cards, doing crossword puzzles, and a fierce game of Scrabble.
Besides her loving husband and daughters, she is survived by many extended family members in Maine, Florida and Maryland. In lieu of flowers, at her request, please donate to:

Her family is grateful for all the care and kindness given to her and them from her medical providers at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, including Dr. Mildred Rivera and her ENTIRE cancer team on the 6th floor of CHH including Dr. Madhavi Gorusu and PA-C Danielle Berube. She bonded with several members of her team from the Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Litchfield County, also. Thank you all very much.
A memorial service for Beverly will take place on Friday, July 12, 2024 from 5:00-7:00 PM at Phalen Funeral Home, 25 Migeon Ave., Torrington, CT 06790. Hawaiian dress is strongly encouraged!
