Richard Calkins, 60, Professional Engineer and life long Torrington resident, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, March 5th, to a much better place after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Torrington, CT on July 11, 1958, a son of the late Sue and John Calkins and is survived by his two loving children Rachel and Michael Calkins both of Torrington along with his brother John and wife Denise Calkins of Torrington, sister Nancy and husband Brian Caldwell of Torrington and niece Casey Calkins of West Hartford and her fiance Kevin DeVivo.
After graduating from Torrington High and Hartford State Technical college, Richard went on to a career in civil engineering, eventually owning his own firm Northeast Consulting LLC for many years. In addition, for nearly 20 years he proudly served his community as Chairman of the Torrington Planning and Zoning Commission overseeing many changes and improvements to his City. He also served on the Torringford School Building Committee.
He enjoyed woodworking and was an avid outdoorsman enjoying early in life hunting with his grandfather and father as well as fishing both fresh and saltwater. He epecially enjoyed fishing at Race Point Beach in Provincetown MA. Most of all he was faithfully devoted to his family and especially his adoring children who meant everything to him.
