Marian (Geary) Schroeder passed away peacefully, at the age of 93, at home, on February 10, 2018. Born March 8, 1924, Marian was the daughter of the late John F. and Mary (Ruot) Geary, and the devoted wife of 45 years of Theodore Schroeder, who died in 1993.
After graduating from Torrington High School in 1941, she attended Danbury State Teachers' College (now Western Ct. State University) where she made many lifelong friendships. Graduating in 1944, she began her teaching career in a one room schoolhouse in Burrville, comprised of grades 1 through 4. She left teaching to raise her family and resumed her career in 1960 at Torringford School, as a kindergarten teacher. During her tenure, she was nominated as Torrington's Teacher of the Year. She retired in 1982 to lovingly care for her ill husband.
She was a lifelong communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church, and served as catechist, trustee, Eucharistic minister, parish council and finance committee member, and belonged to St. Francis Women's Club. She has also participated in the Torrington Area Council of Churches and its Emergency Fund. She was awarded the Hartford Archdiocesan St. Joseph's Medal of Appreciation in 2007. Marian was also a volunteer as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and for FISH (Friends in Service to Humanity). In 2008, she was thrilled to be named as the Lord Mayor of Torrington for St. Patrick's Day.
Marian leaves 3 dearly loved children - son, Kenneth Schroeder and his wife, Mimsie Farrar, of Modesto, CA., a daughter, Ellen Schroeder, of Torrington, and a son, David and his wife Leanora, of Bristol. She also leaves her former daughter in law, Deborah Miller, of Modesto, and her only grandchild, Daniel Miller-Schroeder and his wife, Andrea Blunt, of Los Angeles, CA. She also leaves a sister in law and brother in law, Anne and Jack Conboy. Many dear nieces and nephews and friends also survive her. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by her beloved sister, Jeanne Conboy and several sisters and brothers in law.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, February 17, 11:30 AM at St. Francis Church, 160 Main St., Torrington. Calling hours will be on Friday, February 16, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Phalen Funeral Home, 285 Migeon Ave., Torrington. Burial at Hillside Cemetery will be private, at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. John Paul the Great Parish, 160 Main St., Torrington, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
