John Rodgers Obituary

John Rodgers, of Torrington passed awy Dec. 19, 2019. He was the son of the Rev. Kenneth Rodgers and the late Marya Rogers was born in Oceanside, NY, Feb 2 1961. He attended public school in Torrington CT.  He was a member of the Torrington United Methodist church since 1972, where his father was a minister for 19 years.

After High School John joined the US Army in 1977 where he served in Illesheim Germany for 4 years as a tank commander.  Upon returning from the Army, he worked for several years as a landscaper. John worked as a piano mover as well. He was a gentle giant and could lift over 500 lbs off the ground.  John attended college part time at Northwestern in Winsted and Waterbury State technical college where he studied math, he got straight “As”. John loved the outdoors and enjoyed hiking. When he was in Europe, he hiked all over the Alps.  In the late 80’s John had to go on disability and could not work or finish school.  However, he was still very much a part of the community.  He loved to walk.  He walked all over Torrington, people would often tell our family they would see John walking and he always said hello.  John was very generous and even with all his struggles he always lent his very strong back out to help move just about anything.  He lived on North Elm Street for several years and then moved into the Torrington Towers until his passing.  Torrington was a great home for John and the community was the best thing that ever happened to him, so “Thank you” from John and his family.
