Donald M Kowalski

Donald Matthew Kowalski, of Torrington, on August 31, 2017, passed peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones at the age of 85. Don, as he was known, grew up in Torrington. He met the love of his life, Gertrude also known as Mitzi, on a blind date, whom he married in 1953, which led to 63 years of marriage – a true love story. He worked as a machinist at General Time and Fafnir Bearing. After retirement, he worked for the Register Citizen as well as Birge Park Luncheonette, owned by his late wife. He will be remembered for his love for all things sports especially Uconn Women’s basketball, his passion for fishing, his contagious smile, infectious laugh, strength, determination, kindheartedness and the love he shared with those close to him, especially his family. Don was truly one of a kind. Predeceased by parents Alice (Lambert) Kowalski and Henry Kowalski, three brothers, Hank, Bill and Ken and beloved wife; he leaves behind his two children, Gary Kowalski and Donna Allen; and his twin granddaughters, Rachel Allen and partner Lynsey Michaud and Courtney Vanadestine and husband Garrett as well as future addition to the Vanadestine family, Kaleb Michael. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. A Memorial will be held in his honor Wednesday Sept 6 at 7 PM at Phalen Funeral Home 285 Migeon Ave Torrington.  Friends may call prior to the service from 5-7 PM.
