William “Bill” Schaller, Jr. 83 of Torrington transitioned peacefully with his wife of 58 years by his side on October 27, 2017 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. Bill is survived by his wife Fran DePaoli Schaller of Torrington, his daughter Julie Schaller of Culver City, CA, his son Andy Schaller of Wellington, FL, a nephew and several nieces. He was the son of William Schaller Sr. and Julia Pisarcik Schaller. Bill was predeceased by his sister Elsie Schaller Ostrosky.

A lifelong resident of Torrington, Bill was an Army Veteran who was awarded a Good Conduct Medal. He also was a Letter Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 32 years in his hometown. He was well known and appreciated by both the residents and the dogs on his routes. His strong work ethic and commitment to responsibility allowed him to retire with a year of unused sick leave. Providing for his family’s well being and security were his top priorities. Bill enjoyed duckpin bowling and was a league member. He also had a love of cards. Cribbage and 9-5 were his favorites. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and The Knights of Columbus. His two favorite sports teams were The Red Sox and the UCONN Girls Basketball team. Rarely did he miss an opportunity to watch these teams play a game.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 AM on Monday, November 6, 2017 at Saint Francis Church, 160 Main Street, Torrington, followed by entombment at St. Peter’s Cemetery, 236 East Pearl Road, Torrington . A memorial reception to honor Bill’s memory will follow at Chatterly’s Banquet Facility, 371 Pinewoods Road, Torrington at 1:15pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation in Bill’s name to a local Veteran’s organization.
