Mary Elizabeth Shuler Lefebre died peacefully on August 13th. She was the loving wife of the late James B. Lefebre. Mary was born on February 16, 1918 in Elkhart IN. She was a good sister, proud WWII Army veteran, devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, and a loyal friend. Mary loved all her family until the end. She joined the Army in 1940 when there was a call for nurses and served five years in South Carolina, North Africa, and Italy, at times volunteering for front line field hospital duty. She was the recipient of the EAME Theater Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Stars.   Mary earned a degree in public health from the University of Chicago on the GI bill. She moved East, met her husband, and settled in Torrington. She was a Torrington school nurse for eighteen years. Mary loved playing bridge, Notre Dame football, and UConn Women's basketball. Time may have slowed her body, but never took her good will or sharp mind (and strong opinions).  Playing with her bridge friends gave her immense joy until the end. Mary always said she wanted to enjoy her flowers while she was alive, so in lieu of flowers a donation can be made in her name to Fisher House Veteran's Project and Saint Francis Oktoberfest. A funeral service will be held at Saint Francis on Thursday, August 18th at 10:30AM.
