Joan R (Royals) Stolicny

Joan Royals Stolicny of Torrington, CT passed away on Monday, August 22nd at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer.

Joan was born in Brooklyn, NY on April 26, 1929, daughter of the late John Royals, Jr. and Gertrude (Mueller Royals) Chartier. She was also predeceased by her stepfather Raymond Chartier, stepbrother Ernest Chartier, and her loving brother John Royals III and surviving wife Marie of Torrington.

She leaves behind two sons, Jon and his wife Marie, Michael and his companion Ann, and daughter Jill, who shared her mother’s home and was her caregiver for the last several years of her life, and her husband Tim. Also her sister Adrienne (Chartier) Weik and her husband Fred. Joan leaves two grandsons, Jason and Alex Stolicny, although she considered her nieces, nephews and grand nieces/nephews to be her grandchildren, too. She enjoyed a rewarding life during and after retiring as an art teacher in the Region 10 (Lewis S. Mills) School System. Pleasures of her life included art, her late dachshund Corky, feeding fish in the pond at her home, crossword puzzles, politics and sports, and spending time with her friends and family.

Her love of art started with achieving her Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education from State Teachers College in Pennsylvania in 1950, and later progressed to a Master’s Degree in Art, plus a 6th year, from several colleges in Connecticut. Her art teaching career began at Simsbury HS over 60 years ago. "Stolic", as her students called her, retired from Region 10 School System in 1995, inspiring her students throughout the years.

Visitation hours at Phalen Funeral Home, 285 Migeon Ave in Torrington will be Friday, August 26th from 5-7PM, followed by a memorial service at 7PM.  A family burial service will follow on Saturday, August 27th at 10AM at Hillside Cemetery in Torrington.   In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Joan's name to benefit NCCC – Art Program -Park Pl East Winsted CT 06098.
