Bernard P. “Uncle Bernie” Chevalier of Harwinton started his next journey on February 3, 2017. Bernie was born in Hartford, Connecticut on November 6, 1932 to Victor Chevalier and Gladys (Premo) Chevalier.  Bernie was predeceased by both his parents and by his older brother, Donald F. Chevalier. Bernie graduated from Newington High School, class of 1951. After high school he apprenticed as a cabinet maker at L.F. Dettenborn in Hartford, Connecticut, where he was certified as a journeyman in 1957. He moved to Harwinton, Connecticut in 1957 where he was self employed as a cabinet maker and opened and ran Redchico Kennels for 50 years. Bernie also proudly served the Town of Harwinton working at different times as a Constable and Dog Warden. In addition he worked in security at the Charlotte Hungerford Hospital for many years. Bernie was also a volunteer for the Connecticut State Police Auxiliary where he had the privilege of being a member of the combat pistol team. He was an early member of the First Litchfield Artillery Regiment where he became the units first Sergeant Major. Using his skills as a cabinet maker, Bernie made a wooden mold of cannon barrel which was used to create the bronze cannon barrel that the Artillery uses to this day. Bernie loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman and in his later years loved vacationing with his wife which he called “going on the boat”.

Bernie is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Charleen (Hine) Chevalier, his “sister” Marcella Schmitt of Newington, Connecticut, a nephew, John Chevalier of New Hartford, Connecticut and two nieces, Susan Wheeler and Mary Chevalier, both of Goshen Connecticut as well as several grand nieces and nephews.
